Just when you think you've covered your bases,
the cycle starts again.
Lubbock is starting to feel a lot like one of my kickboxing
sessions at Flex Fitness. Trying to keep pace with the two of
them is an exercise.
Here we go.
• McAlister's Deli is coming to Lubbock.
The Dallas-based franchisee - Saxton Pierce Restaurant
Corp. - has begun a heavy-duty remodel of the former Carl's
Jr. site at 2415 19th St., which has been closed for the past
year.
Adam Saxton, director of development for the privately held
family concern, said McAlister's is a casual dining restaurant
featuring more than 100 different sandwiches, salads, soups,
spuds and sweets.
Saxton Pierce is the franchisee for Texas and Oklahoma,
where the company now operates 19 McAlister locations and is
opening one every 60 days.
Nationally, Ridgeland, Miss.-based McAlister Corp. operates
or has franchise agreements in place involving 200 locations.
Saxton said his family company likes college towns.
"We're excited about coming to Lubbock. I expect right now
we'll be open by early November," he said.
• Niraj Investments LLP said it plans to construct a
three-story Super 8 Motel at the northwest corner of
Interstate 27 and 66th Street.
The property joins what's become the city's biggest
concentration of hotels and motels that continue to pop up
just west of I-27 near Loop 289.
Subodh Patel says the company will break ground on the
project sometime in September. It's expected to be completed
by summer 2006.
• I'm also told that another still unidentified group has
acquired the northwest corner of I-27 and 50th Street, where a
new Value Place Hotel is expected to be built.
Value Place, which already operates a location at 2311 W.
Loop 289, is a short-term residential hotel/apartment hybrid
property. No other details are known.
• A new upper-end women's fashion store is set to open Oct.
1 near the northeast corner of 98th Street and Quaker Avenue.
Shae Monet, 4214 98th St., will open in the former Elan
women's fitness center next to Sophisticuts Salon.
The store is being launched by Whitney Blair and Monica,
Jennifer, Matt and Mark Adams.
Blair tells me the store will be bring the latest in
apparel, shoes and handbag fashions from New York to the
Lubbock market.
More on this boutique as we get closer to the opening.
• The Ashley Furniture Store, located at 5026 Frankford
Ave., is scheduled to open at the end of the month.
• Finally, let's put this rumor to bed: Hal Smith
Restaurant Group, located in Norman, Okla., has no plans to
close the Krispy Kreme store here. The rumor apparently
started because the company did close an underperforming store
in Amarillo.
"Lubbock has just been a wonderful experience for us,"
Smith told me last week. I can tell you right now that store
isn't even on the radar screen to close."
